近親者による物故者のための造像を「奉為の造像」と位置づけ、広く東アジアに分布する事例を対象に、そこに通底する宗教思想を踏まえて分析し、その意味と意義を解明する。その上で、そのような理念が日本においてどのように造像に結実したのかを考察する。
