| Research Abstract |
Social concern is increasing in preventing fall of aged. The improvement in walking ability of elderly is important for quality of life and fall prevention. Improvement of flexibility of lower limb, walking ability and muscular strength of the lower limb is important to preserve and improve in ADL and QOL. Local authority and assisted living residence provide several kinds of exercises for prevention of falling in aged. But the evaluation methods have little scientific basis to assess the exercises easily and quantitatively. We focused that flexibility of lower limb, walking ability and muscular strength of the lower limb of aged. The aim of this study is to investigate the new evaluation index on the flexibility of lower limb, walking ability and muscular strength of the lower limb. In the first year, the measurement systems and the data processing systems were developed. The data analyzing methods are also investigated. The data were obtained from elderly, who have abnormalities in toenail, living in a special elderly nursing home. In order to assess the change of their lower limb function, all subjects received the medical foot care for one year. In the second year, the new evaluation indexes are studied by using the data that were measured and analyzed regularly since the first year. The indexes that are obtained from the data show the differences of the foot functions between before the medical foot care and after the foot care. The results suggest that it seems possible to assess the lower limb function of elderly quantitatively and to show their foot function, risk of falls.
