Research Abstract |
In this project, we focused on producer's activity in developing countries, and analyzed how and what environmental policy we could develop in order to control production and circulation of goods in light of minimization of solid waste. For these objectives, we conducted research work in three Asian countries such as Nepal, Cambodia, and Vietnam, focusing on beverage containers as a case study, and examined concept of developing a new goods, methodology, activity of environmental conservation, their own retrieval system for post-consumed containers, and reaction to governmental new policies. Then we gained followings as a result. 1) Glass and plastic are main container materials in these countries 2) Almost all companies do not have their own retrieval system, excepting for a few large companies like multinational one 3) Interviewees of the companies recognize importance of environmental protection 4) They also know a present issue of solid waste in their locality 5) A large percentage of companies do not recognize that environmental benign concept is an important factor 6) In these three countries, the governments do not have any regulatory or economic tools for control beverage containers 7) Companies are unwillingly to change a present situation of the company, such as development, production, and circulatory method of their goods 8) However, they show their willingness to accept a bunch of new policy measures if their government introduce 9) In this regard, government's willingness and leadership are so important These results mean that there is condition needed for development a new policy even in countries like one researched in this project. We can recommend that the governments in developing countries should turn their eyes from counter measures to preventive one in a field of solid waste management, and immediately set out to materialize a programme for them.
