Research Abstract

We introduced a method of early warning system for debris flow by using point rainfall and an evacuation technique on debris flow by using a sensor of ground tremor and mobile phones. This provides an easy way to setup in preparing against heavy rain disasters not only in volcanic areas but also in the every mountain areas. This method was confirmed by field observations in the Nojiri River of Sakurajima Volcano, Japan. Our trigger system of detecting volcanic debris flows can also detect the occurrence of non-volcanic landslides and snow avalanches among others.
All checked sensors are a ground vibration sensor, a dynamic image sensor monitoring the torrent flows by using right-vision camera, a rainfall sensor and a sensor of soil water content under the ground surface. Electric power consumption was checked for stabilizing the maintenance of apparatuses by using a solar system.
The communication reliability was also checked between the location of sensors at the torrent of upper reaches and the location of Internet computer server which are used for collecting the sensor data. The tested interval is between Sakurajima Volcano and the research laboratory at Kagoshima National College of Technology. These methods were checked by wireless LAN, by mobile phones, by communication satellite and by MCA wireless communication system.
Our research activities were presented at the academic conferences of JSECE, JSCE in Japan and 4th DFHM in China.
