Research Abstract |
In the Modern Society we are really required to recognize the philosophy of co-living (Kyosei,共生) among human beings or between human beings and environment. Since the modern society has been formed on the basis of the rationalism of modern western intelligence, and it has eventually caused many serious problems, we must now again reflect on the possibility of Eastern philosophies. The aim of this research project is to create the new Kyosei philosophy considering Eastern thoughts such as Japanese, Chinese, Indian thoughts, as well as Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic religions. At the beginning of the first academic year we discussed the concepts of Kyosei variously advocated in Japanese society. After serious discussions we reach a general consensus that the concept of Kyosei can be considered that people of different opinions should make creative relationships one another leaving their differences. And then each member deepens his thinking about Kyosei philosophy in his own subject or discipline. Especially, Prof. Shirakawabe made the field research of old documents of Edo-era in some domestic areas, and Prof. Hashimoto and Prof. Miyamoto went to India to investigate the actual situation of the relationships of people belonging to different religions in Indian society. From the first academic year each member has published his articles in various bulletins or has given presentation in various academic conferences. We have published the final research report as the fruit of our project at the end of this second academic year. Although this project has come to an end, we really wish to continue this exploring research of Kyosei philosophy in Research Center for Kyosei Philosophy and Transdisciplinary Initiative for Eco-Philosophy, both in Toyo 'University. Our final purpose is to establish the Kyosei-gaku (Co-living studies) through the method of transdisciplinary research.
