Research Abstract |
West Saxon dialect, the literary standard in the Old English period, provides us with at least five manuscripts of the Gospels, which are followed by a thirteenth-century version on this tradition. Manuscript variants of the same dialect are expected to give evidence of diachronic changes lexically and morphologically. But even though they are written in the same period of time, they show scribal differences and/or distinctions in manuscript designs. Each verse of each chapter, when arranged side by side in my future edition, may present greater divergence than expected.
