Research Abstract |
I carried out the following research about the graduate school by distance education in Japan (22 master's programs including the Open University of Japan, 8 doctor's programs, and a professional degree program). 1. The collection of basic data such as the field of study, the number of students, the profile of them, the enrollment and completion, and the method of teaching and learning. 2. The visit to the schools and the interview to the faculty, staff and teaching assistant or mentor of them. I visited 11 schools, and 2 schools which will found a graduate school by distance education in 2008. 3. The visit to the schools and the observation of schooling and other events such as the master's thesis announcement society. I visited 5 schools. 4. The questionnaire survey to the students about (1) the profile of the respondent of the questionnaire, (2) the environment of media, (3) the condition of learning, and (4) the opinion about the graduate school by distance education. Among 23 schools, I distributed a questionnaire to the all students of 12 schools, and got 513 answers (recovery rate is 39.8%). 5. The publication of the results of research. I announced the results of research in the 27th annual conference in October, 2006 of the Japan Association of Lifelong Education (the title of the announcement is "The university reform and the lifelong education: on the recurrent education function of the adult"), and in 10th annual conference in May, 2007 of the Japanese Association of Higher Education Research (the title of the announcement is "The present conditions and problems of graduate school by distance education in Japan: focusing on the Division between the University at a Distance and the University by Attendance").
