Research Abstract

Power converter is one of the most important devices in mobile terminal since it wastes much energy. Therefore, the achievement of the power converter with small scale and high efficiency is quite important. On the other hand, it is also important to achieve the power converter with a low voltage/high current output since the number of the transistors on one chip increases steeply. It is the purpose of this research to establish the fundamental techniques toward the realization of "on-chip power converter" . Important results are described as follows. 1. The power converter with a low voltage/high current output and high power conversion efficiency is proposed and designed. This converter consists of the circuit design technique for the high frequency and high efficiency operation, called as class E switching, and the circuit topology technique for the low voltage/high current output, called as interleaving. 2. The phase-control technique is applied to the converter that is proposed in 1. The important characteristics are clarified by numerical and experimental results. The results show that high power conversion efficiency can be kept under the wide control range. 3. The adaptive sliding mode control using simple adaptive control is applied to buck converter as one of the digital control application.
The high frequency operation due to the class E switching means the small scale of memory elements of the converter, which extends the possibility of the implementation of the on-chip power converter. It is expected that the low voltage/high current output and high power conversion efficiency are applicable to the design of the power converter with various specifications. Additionally, the results of a digital control in this research have impact to improve digital power converters.
