Research Abstract |
The need for battery energy storage systems(BESS) in modern power systems is increasing. NAS(sodium-sulfur) battery systems are promising for mass energy storage. The commercial implementation of NAS battery systems has taken place quickly in Japan. The usage of NAS battery system is important to promote renewable energies. This study analyzes practical operation data of a typical 1000kW NAS battery at Meisei University. A Load forecast is formulated using accumulated load records for the campus. A new load-following control scheme is developed, and its performance is simulated. The main purpose of our project is to report practical records and to present some algorithms essential for load following operation of BESS. The proposed algorithm relates to the load forecast in a limited area, and is based on case retrieval of past data. Temperature sensitivity obtained from field data is utilized to forecast load curves. The proposed control algorithm relates to load following operation. A key issue is that charged energy has to be discharged without excessive discharge and without leaving surplus energy. The definition of optimal control is difficult, since it depends on individual situations and contracts. The performance of control is evaluated by some indices instead.
