炭化ケイ素の液相焼結と力学特性に及ぼす出発粉体のサイズ効果

Research Abstract

炭化ケイ素(SiC)セラミックスの力学特性向上のため、0.8μm SiC(SiCA)に30nm SiC (siCB)を体積比で25vol%混合した成形体を作製した。焼結助剤としての希土類元素の影響を調べるため、Y^<3+>イオンを基準として半径の小さいYb^<3+>と大きいGd^<3+>について、Al_2O_3-Y_2_O_3、Al_2O_3-Yb_2O_3およびAl_2O_3-Gd_2O_3系助剤(2.4vol%)を加えた。1950℃での加圧焼結後、力学特性を評価した(強度、破壊靱性、ワイブル係数)。焼結体の相対密度はAl_2O_3-Y_2O_3系、Al_2O_3-Yb_2O_3系およびAl_2O_3-Gd_2O_3系助剤でそれぞれ96.8-99.2,98.0-99.0および96.3-99.3%であった。一方、焼結体の粒径はAl_2O_3-Y_2O_3系、Al_2O_3-Yb_2O_3系およびAl_2O_3-Gd_2O_3系助剤でそれぞれ2.0,2.0および1.2μmであった。密度増加にはYb^<3+>イオン,粒成長の抑制にはGd^<3+>イオンが有効である。焼結体の4点曲げ強度、破壊靱性およびワイブル係数は以下の通りである。AI_2O_3-Y2_O_3系:812MPa,6.0MPa・m^<1/2>,5.9,Al_2O_3-Yb_2O_3系:734MPa,6.3MPa・m^<1/2>,9,2,Al_2O_3-Gd_2O_3系:796MPa,5.3MPa・m^<1/2>,8.1。Al_2O_3-Yb_2O_3系で強度が減少したが、市販SiCの強度(400-600MPa)に比べ約1.2-2倍高い値であった。最高強度はAl_2O_3-Y_2O_3系の1080MPaであった。Al_2O_3-Gd_2O_3系で破壊靱性が減少した。Al_2O_3-Yb_2O_3系およびAl_2O_3-Gd_2O_3系はワイブル係数を増加させるのに有効であった。
