| Research Abstract |
Objective : Instead of excision of the focus of intractable epilepsy, we test the efficacy of neck cooling in rat animal model.
Methods : (1) Use a thermoelectric Peltier chip, measure the temperature change of the device. (2) After 15 minutes contact of circulating frozen ethylene glycol direct to rat's neck, measure the deep brain temperature (6 rats). (3) Compare the threshold of afterdischarges (ADs) between cooling and non-cooling neck groups (7 rats). (4) As a substitution of cooling methods, direct current stimulation (DC, 2mA 3s) was supplied to the wide flat electrodes (5mm X 5mm) directly on the left hippocampal cortex. ADs threshold induced at left hippocampal were compared (10 trials).
Results : (1) Cooling Peltier chip could not induce overall cooling because of heat radiation side. (2) Cooling was not statistically significant using circulating frozen ethylene glycol (Cooled 29.0±0.7℃, Non-cooled 30.3±0.7℃). (3) Threshold and duration of ADs were not different (Threshold ; Cooled 2.0±0.7mA, Non-cooled 1.9±0.4mA). (4) DC provided raise of ADs threshold (With DC 3.7±2.7mA, without DC 2.3±1.2mA, p= 0.0149).
Conclusion : We could not obtain satisfactory result using neck cooling. As a substitution of cooling method, DC directly on cortex provides reduction of epileptic activity.
