Research Abstract	従来、発展段階的に把握されてきた中世後期社会の展開に対して、早島2006を中心とする論考では、この時期に首都としての姿を明瞭にした京都の政治的・経済的求心力に注目し、室町幕府体制が確立した14c末〜15c初頭の飛躍的発展と、幕府が解体していく15c末〜16c初頭以降の低迷という流れで理解すべきと主張した。中世後期社会の特徴は、かつて京-公家の都と鎌倉-武家の都に分かれていた列島社会の核が京都に一元化され、政治・経済の上で大きな求心力を有した点にあった点にあり、社会の展開も室町幕府の消長にリンクしたものであった。
