Research Abstract

宇宙の誕生当時には、水素やヘリウムしか存在しなかった。しかし現在は、炭素・酸素・鉄などの重元素がたくさん存在している。これらは星や超新星爆発による核融合で合成された後、なんらかの過程で宇宙空間へと拡散したものである。銀河や銀河団は重力で高温ガスを閉じ込めており、それは重元素の貯蔵庫といえる。そこで我々は、日本のX 線天文衛星すざくで銀河・銀河団の高温ガスを観測することにより、重元素が増える過程を観測的に明らかにした。また、銀河中心領域の超高エネルギーガンマ線天体をすざく衛星でX 線観測し、これらはX線で非常に暗いことを発見した。これは、これらの天体で陽子が加速されており、宇宙線の起源と関連することを示唆する。
