東南アジア熱帯雨林におけるフタバガキ科樹木の開花・結実機構の解明

Research Abstract

東南アジア熱帯雨林の優占種で、この地域の生態系修復・再生の鍵を握るフタバガキ科の樹木について、その繁殖メカニズムに及ぼす資源と環境の影響を調べた。平成20年度は、これまで継続して行ってきたフタバガキ科樹木数種の樹体内貯蔵物質の蓄積過程に関する調査についてデータ解析を行った。まず、フタバガキ科の巨大高木Dryobalanops aromaticaの開花・結実期間中の樹体内での濃度変化を調べたところ、リンの顕著な濃度減少が確認された。そこで、D.aromatica 30個体(直径30cm以上)について、2002年から2005年の間の樹体内へのリンの蓄積具合と、開花や結実状況を調べた。その結果、各個体の結実量と幹のリン濃度の減少量との間には、有意な正の相関関係が見られた。つまり、D. aromaticaの繁殖には、樹体内へのリンの蓄積が重要で、開花・結実に必要なリンが蓄積できていない状態では種内での同調的な繁殖イベントには参加できない可能性が示唆された。この結果は、土壌が貧栄養な熱帯雨林の環境では、特に制限因子となりやすいリンの獲得が、フタバガキ科巨大高木の繁殖に大きな影響を及ぼす可能性を示唆している。また、フタバガキ科巨大高木の炭水化物資源の蓄積に直接的に影響する樹冠部の葉の生理生態的特性にも注目して調査を行った。その結果、フタバガキ科の巨大高木D. aromaticaとShorea beccarianaでは、同じような光環境においても、樹冠の位置で異なった水利用を行っており、樹冠上部では樹冠下部に比べて日中の水ストレスは大きいものの、高い水利用効率を示すことがわかった。さらに、階層構造が発達した熱帯雨林の垂直的な光環境に注目し、林冠クレーンシステムを活用して詳細な調査を行い、その結果を学術論文にまとめた。
