Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Label-free biomolecule sensing has strongly benefited from development in optical techniques. Here, we propose two approaches relying on dielectric materials for label-free biomolecule detection, namely, using concentrated light in a nanojet at the tip of an optical fiber and using confined light in a guided surface wave. This fiscal year, the nanojet based detection scheme was demonstrated. In this scheme, light is concentrated near the optical fiber tip (nanojet), the biomaterials (bacteria) are trapped near the optical fiber tip by using electrophoretic force and the detection signal is the Raman signal detected near the fiber tip and collected by the same optical fiber.
