Research Abstract

液晶種として、コレステリック液晶、キラルスメクチック液晶、TGB様液晶を示し、さらにはそのらせん周期が可視光域にあるような多様な液晶高分子素材の創製法を確立した。
光学活性な液晶高分子の開発には限度があり、そのため通常の液晶高分子にキラルドーパントを混合する方法でキラル液晶を創生する必要がある。そのためには、らせん誘起力(HTP)の高いキラルドーパントの開発が重要となる。多種のドーパントの開発を行い、わずか数パーセントの混合で、可視領域にピッチを持つキラル液晶の創製に成功した。また一つの素材で、温度変化によりらせんの掌性が右手系から左手系のもの、またらせんの周期長がさまざまに変化する系を確立した。これらは、材料素材の性質を大きく変えることなく、多様な光学的性質を持つらせん構造材料の設計ができることを示すもので、工学上意義のある発見であった。
らせんピッチを空間的に変調し、可視光全域の光を反射するフィルムの創製に成功し、またらせん軸をフィルム素材の表面に平行、あるいは垂直、また任意の角度になるように、さらにはラセン軸が膜面に対してアンジュレーションしたようなフィルムの創製法を確立し、光学材料フィルムとして多様な応用が展開できる可能性を示すとともに、その偏光板、グレーテリング板等への応用について検討した。
また液晶を中心とした研究を進めてきた結果、バナナ型分子が、アキラルであるにも関わらずらせんを有するキラル液晶を自発的に形成すること、棒状の高分子がスメクチック液晶を形成し、分子長に相応した10-200nmのナノ周期の層構造を生み出すこと、また、リオトロピック性液晶高分子のドロプレット状溶液を乾燥する過程で、乾燥速度に依存して、乾燥方向に垂直に500-10000nmの規則的な周期構造ができることなどを見出し、ナノ周期構造を創製する上で液晶場が重要な場であることを確認した。
