Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research is a practical study of Japanese cultural resources held by museums, libraries and private collectors in Europe and North America, especially ukiyo-e prints and illustrated books that have been out of Japan for a long time, by comprehensively digitizing and registering them in a database and adding necessary metadata for integrated search and use.
By applying the Pl's high volume, high speed and high quality digitization technology and enhancing the functionality of the specialized Ukiyo-e and old books database developed by the PI and operated by his research institute, the world's largest portal-type database in this field will be established, enabling a wide range of domestic and international researchers of Japanese culture to use the database as an essential research resource.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、研究代表者が2003年以来、継続的に実施してきた研究課題であり、長期にわたる地道な調査と的確なデジタル技術の応用によって、近世期から明治期に制作された浮世絵や絵入本に関する世界最大の研究資源データベースを成立させているところに意義がある。絵入本に関しては、挿絵だけでなく、表紙から裏表紙まで全ページが閲覧できることによる研究資料としての価値が高い。特に今期の研究期間中には、コロナ禍による人流の停止があり、オンラインによる研究環境の重要性が認識されるにあたり、本研究の本質的な意義が社会的にも十分に理解された。さらに、この活動による組織間ネットワークが確立したのも意義があるだろう。
