Outline of Final Research Achievements

Based mainly on the sdudies on the texts by Ibn Khaldun (d. 1406) and al-`Umari (d. 1349), we made a investigation about various aspects of Arabic intellectuals in the age of change, 13th to 15th centuries. Our research achievements include relationship between religious scholarship and scribal craft, regional varieties found in al-Mashriq and al-Maghrib, and others.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

狭義の宗教諸学を中心に理解されることの多かった前近代のアラビア語知識人についてより包括的に論じることができた。また、東アラブ地域（マシュリク）と西アラブ地域（マグリブ）との関係を検討し、アラビア語文化圏が必ずしも一枚岩ではないことを明らかにした。いずれも、茫漠としたイスラーム世界やアラブ世界といった概念だけでは、この地域を理解することができないことを示している。
