Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The grant-in-aid research was aimed at investigating and comparing the link between governance elements and performance of family and non-family firms in Japan. The COVID-19 restrictions made us impossible to present our papers in Japan and in other countries. We have made some field visits to Japanese family firms while not being able to visit foreign family firms as originally planned. Though, we were able to write two papers related to family business and finance research (by Kutsuna) and Corporate governance and firm performance comparison paper between listed family and listed non-family firms in Japan (Kojima and Adhikary).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Continued from the previous year, we have conducted research on family firms in Japan. We continued to analyze our findings in previous year such as, how governance, board, and ownership structures affect firm performance with various variables. We also contined to investigate CEO-Chairman family connection and its relations to firm performance as measured by Return on Asset (ROA). We have done some analysis on ownership characteristics variables such as family ownership, institutional ownership, foreign ownership, and government ownership and board characteristics variables such as board size, number of board meeting, percentage of independent director, and percentage of non-executive directors on board.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will continue to analyze the dataset and plan to compile the findings in at least one research paper titled: Does CEO-Chairman Family Relationship Matter in Firm Performance? Further Evidence Using the Board Independence as Moderator. As the COVID-19 related restrictions will certainly affect our research project in number of ways, we will probably need to figure out how to conduct field visits, conference presentations and to wrap up the project just like previous year.
