Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research project, we have investigated mechanics and geometry of a range of thin structures including rods, ribbons, plates and cylindrical shells by combining physical experiments, numerical simulations and analytical theory. The project aimed at obtaining mechanical insights onto the structures and functions of walled biological cells such as bacteria and plant cells. While we were less successful at revealing effects of large turgor pressure on such stiff walled cells, we were able to obtain the major results in the five inter-related projects, the details of which are described separately in this final report.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
