Outline of Final Research Achievements

We measured N2O emissions from an Andosol field for three years using an automated flux monitoring system. The annual N2O emission was significantly lower in the nitrification inhibitor treatment than in the urea treatment, due to low N2O emission after fertilizer application. Cabbage yield was not significantly different. Therefore, the both N2O emission per area and per yield were lower in the nitrification inhibitor treatment than in the urea treatment. In addition, nitrification was inhibited by nitrification inhibitors. Our results showed that nitrification inhibitor can reduce N2O emissions and reduce the labor cost of additional fertilizer application while maintaining the yield.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
