Outline of Annual Research Achievements

As described in the project proposal, the primary goal of the first year of this project is to build a tabletop prototype that can perform two functions: 1) modify brightness of objects in the user’s environment; 2) modify sharpness/blur of these objects.
We have been building two prototypes. The first one (prototype A) only addresses part 1) from above. The second one (prototype B) addresses both parts from above: 1) and 2).
Prototype A works well and we are in the process of conducting an experiment with it. Nara Institute of Science and Technology’s Ethics Committee has recently approved our experimental design. We believe that we can complete this experiment and submit a paper to the IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality on 15 March 2019. Our experiment will consist of two parts: First, we want to measure how a very tiny amount of brightening can speed up visual search tasks of numbers on one plane. Second, we want to measure such a speed up for finding 3D-objects on a table.
Prototype B is progressing well. By combining a controllable occlusion mask with a liquid lens for refocusing, we can generate novel views that exhibit focus at different distances―views that would be impossible to experience with bare eyes. So far, we have completed the high-speed synchronization of the involved optical components with an accuracy within several milliseconds. At the moment, we are working on optimizing the masking patterns to minimize spatio-temporal aliasing.
