Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Due to COVID, we shifted the research towards more virtual reality (VR) evaluations and augmentations. In the last year of the project we look mostly into augmentations that can help users overcome the daily cognitive fluctuations focusing on specific applications: improving sleep/napping, motion sickness while traveling, reducing anxiety, and improving alertness while driving. We evaluate cognitive fluctuations and improve cognitive performance over a napping assistant using Sleep Assistant using virtual reality (VR) to decrease sleep onset latency. The assistant also estimates the sleep onset and can evaluate how well the users sleep using a deep learning approach. We published the results in the premier Virtual Reality Journal.Continuing our previous research on dealing with specific effects that decrease cognitive performance, we implemented several approaches to combat motion sickness in virtual reality and in real life scenarios (transportation) and present a novel smart eyewear to improve motion sickness in users, published at ISWC the premiere Wearable Computing conference. In relation to COVID, we also looked into ways to mediate anxiety using haptic feedback for remote workers. Additionally, we evaluated thermal feedback on the user’s cognition in general and driving situations. For that end we build a novel headset and evaluated the feedback mechanism.
We also will co-organize a prestigious Dagstuhl Seminar on the topic of Cognitive Augmentation. It was planned last year as dissemination for our results, yet it was postponed.
