Outline of Annual Research Achievements

地球温暖化により、地球の気候システムが後戻りできない臨界点を超えつつあると懸念されているが、臨界点を超える際の気候・環境変化の詳細は不明である。最終氷期にグリーンランドで生じた急激な気候変動 (Dansgaard-Oeschgarイベント、略してDOイベント)は、気候システムが臨界点を超えた現象と考えられるため、DOイベントを詳細に研究することで臨界点を超える際の気候・環境変化、更に気候が安定していた時代との違いが解明できる。本年度はグリーンランドのEGRIP地点で掘削した深層氷床コア（EGRIP深層コア）からDOイベント9－11に対応する深さの試料を切り出して日本に輸送し、氷床コア連続融解分析システム（CFA）を用いて水の安定同位体比、ダスト、ブラックカーボン（BC）、酸化鉄、海塩や鉱物ダスト由来の元素の分析を実施した。CFAによって取得した各種データを用いて陸域や海洋の環境変動を復元した。また、スイスのベルン大学で実施した国際共同CFAキャンペーンで取得したEGRIP深層コアのBCのデータを解析し、最終退氷期から完新世にかけての大規模な気候変動に伴う森林火災の変動を復元した。
最終氷期と異なり、気候が比較的安定していた完新世でも過去数百年を見た場合、北極域では20世紀前半と1990年代以降に、急速な温暖化が生じていた。本年度は、最終氷期の急激な気候変動との比較のため、昨年度に引き続き、グリーンランドのEGRIP地点で掘削した浅層氷床コア（EGRIP浅層コア）を用いて各種の分析を行い、過去数百年の気候・環境変動を復元した。更に、走査型電子顕微鏡（SEM）による鉱物ダスト粒子の元素分析を行った。取得したデータをグリーンランド北西部のSIGMA-D地点で掘削した浅層コア（SIGMAコア）の分析データと併せて解析し、過去数百年に生じた温暖化に伴う陸域や海洋の環境変動を復元した。
