Outline of Annual Research Achievements

具体的な成果の概要は、以下のとおりである。(1)超分子ポリマーは構造形成の可逆性、環境適合性、自己修復性などの特徴から、次世代のプラスチック材料として注目されている。しかしながら、超分子重合の研究はこれまでほとんど溶液中での基礎的な検討に終始しており、バルク材料としてとらえた検討はこれまでほとんど行われてこなかった。本研究は、今後進むであると考えられる超分子ポリマー→機能性材料という材料科学の流れを牽引することが期待できる。 [Science 2019; J. Soc. 2019](2)熱安定性・自己修復性という材料特性は一般にトレードオフの関係にあり、両立しない。一方、本研究では、多価の弱い分子間相互作用により分子を巧みに自己集合させることで、トレードオフ関係を克服することに世界で初めて成功した。本成果は熱安定を追求してきた多孔性材料の新たな設計指針になりうる。[Science 2018](3)2次元材料の段階的層間拡張現象を結晶構造解析によって解明した世界初の例である。さらに、異なる層間拡張状態の結晶から、層数選択的な多孔性ナノシートを合成することに成功した。規則配列した無数のナノ細孔を有するナノシートの新たな合成指針となり得る。[J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2019](4)原子レベルで構造制御されたナノグラフェンから、世界で初めて環境に応答するナノ空間を構築することに成功した。巨大π平面に囲まれたナノ空間は、小分子の取り込みに際し柔軟にその構造を変化させ、結果として新奇吸着現象の発見につながった。[J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2019]

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

当初の主な目標は以下の3つであった。【1】分子固体界面の融合と分離の分子科学【2】固相表面上での組織化に関わる分子科学【3】非球状剛直多価電解質のコロイド界面科学
本研究では、【1】~【3】でそれぞれ破格の成果を上げ、論文発表を行っている。とくに【1】においては、液晶中での超分子重合に着目し、「超分子ポリマーが液晶と一体となり、カラムナー相を形成する」世界で初めての現象を発見し、その原理を明らかにした(Science 2019; J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2019)。本研究は、今後進むであると考えられる超分子ポリマー→機能性材料という材料科学の流れを牽引することが期待できる。また、『自己修復性ポリマーガラス』についても、分子骨格を様々に変えたり、ポリマーブレンドの手法によって、自己修復機能の機構解明および自己修復能の向上が可能となり、順調に進捗しており、以前報告した系をはるかに凌駕する自己修復性を実現するための原理解明に近づきつつある。
当初の研究目標に関する成果に加え、分子界面を組み上げ、メソーマクロスケールでの界面を構築する延長線上にあり、実用上も重要な材料群、多孔性材料に関する研究プロジェクトを新たに立ち上げた。すでにいくつかの興味深い成果が得られている。例えば結晶性の多孔体でありながら、自己修復性を有する材料の開発が上げられる(Science 2019, 361, 1242.) 。本系では、単一では非常に弱い結合を多価相互作用として分子内に集積し、それら分子が緻密に組みあがることで構築されている。耐熱性と自己修復性という一般に相容れない特性の両立に成功した。本成果は多孔性材料の新たな設計指針になりうる。
以上、本研究では、当初の課題をほぼ達成しているばかりか、複数の予想外の発見をするに至っている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

当初計画していた3本柱[1]分子固体界面の融合と分離に関わる分子科学、[2]固相表面上での組織化に関わる分子科学、[3]非球状剛直多価電解質のコロイド界面科学に加え、新たに立ち上げた結晶性・多孔性材料についてもさらに研究を推し進める。その過程では、表面・界面の分子情報や摂動を合目的的に利用し、物質単体では実現できない革新的機能を創出する学理を最終的に樹立する。
