Project Period (FY) 2018-04-01 – 2023-03-31
KeywordsKant / Transcendental Idealism / Molinism / Things in themselves / Philosophy of Religion
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I have completed the penultimate draft of a paper "Varieties of Noumena" about how Kant's two models of explaining the distinction of things in themselves and appearances are connected. Also, a manuscript on Molinism in Kant, answering to commentaries made with regard to an earlier suggestion of mine by Prof Desmond Hogan from Princeton University, is nearly completed. The paper draft on Kant's practical philosophy is now more focused on the question whether the moral law demands holiness according to Kant, and how this is consistent with the principle "ought implies can", since Kant appears to be saying that human beings are not capable of becoming holy. A second dimension of this paper deals with the question how to understand Kant's conception of grace. It has turned out that in this regard too, Molina's ideas are highly relevant.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

I have slightly changed the order of the treatment of the topics included in this research projects, because it turned out that certain arguments required addressing other issues first. The overall timeframe has not really been affected by this.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I plan to give presentations on the basis of these manuscripts and prepare them for publication.

In particular, I plan to spend time at universities in the US -- and I have made extensive preparations for this already, such as a successful application for a visiting fellowship at Princeton University, for example -- in order to discuss these ideas with leading international experts of the field.

In this way, I also hope to make up for the lost opportunities of international research cooperation during the covid crisis.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the Covid19-situation, traveling was not possible, so that the funds reserved for it could not be used. I am planning to use the funds together with the travel funds allocated for this year for one or two longer stays at universities in the US and procedures to obtain the status of visiting fellow are already under way. The rest of the plan remains the same.
