Outline of Final Research Achievements

The most sacred space in a church is called a choir, where the high clergymen sit down. There are choir stalls, which have misericords. This research seeks to analyze the meanings of misericords and the structure and functions of the choir stalls in the four regions of Germany.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ドイツ・ミゼリコルディアの主要モティーフは仮面である。最古の年記を持つアインベック聖アレクサンドリ聖堂の主要モティーフは葉状仮面で、グリーンマンという森の生命を暗示する。この地域はハルツ山地という魔物信仰が盛んな地域で、それが内陣の美術に反映している。
また16世紀初期ウルム・ミュンスターでの主要モティーフはロバ耳の帽子を被る阿呆仮面である。これは同時代文学や版画などに登場する大衆文化のイメージである。このようにして中世の教会の中に市民生活の要素が入り込んでいることが美術の側面から解明された。
