Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During the 2023 academic year, one research article related to my research theme was published in the Japanese Review of Canadian Literature [ カナダ文学研究 第 31 号] entitled "Ken of Tim Hortons: Neoliberalism and Pastiche Male Hegemony in Contemporary Atlantic Canadian Fiction” [ ティム ・ ホートンスのケン: 現代アトランティック ・ カナタ小説における新自由主義と 模倣的男性覇権 ]. The essay examines the role of consumption in practices of masculine identity and assertions of masculine authority. The essay links these practices to notions of the self consonant with neoliberal ideology. Three novels from the Canadian province of Newfoundland are examined: Michael Winter’s Minister Without Portfolio (2013), Kenneth J. Harvey’s Inside (2007), and Edward Riche’s Rare Birds (1997).
