Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this study was to analyze in detail three historical debates that took place in postwar Germany (West Germany and reunified Germany). The three historical debates are the Fischer Controversy in 1961, the Historians' Dispute in 1986, and the Goldhagen Debate in 1996.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

どの論争についてもこれまでさまざまな研究が試みられてきたが，その関心は主に，論者たちのアイデンティティを読み解きながら，彼らを文化的・社会的にいかに位置づけるかに向けられてきた。たしかに，そのようにして描き出されたその時々のドイツの文化的・社会的状況の見取り図が，個々の文学作品や文化・社会現象を分析する上で多大な貢献をしてきたことは疑いがない。しかしその一方で，彼らを一定の枠組みに押し込めてきたことも事実である。
本研究はそのような既存の狭い枠組みを打破するとともに，ともすれば危険な思想ともなりかねない言説が発生する要因を探り，そうした思想の発生を抑止することにも貢献することができる。
