Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The grant conducted three main activities in 2018. First, experimental paradigm for a comparative task was developed in a weekly meeting with a post-doctoral researcher. Four possible tasks were identified. Second, replication study of the case marking experiment. This study was only done in Korean, so a Japanese study allowed assistants to learn the research paradigm. Three research assistants perused the original studies and created a replication experiment for data collection. Third, running Japanese experiment for an instrumental case experiment. We've recorded Japanese stimuli and created the experiment in conjunction with Korean and US researchers. In July 2018, a research meeting with external consultant was held in order to brainstorm various aspects of the grant projects. In November 2018, a research visit to Guwahati, India ensured the initial stage of data collection. The local international consultant facilitated the meetings with the Bodo speakers where we established that the Bodo language is a nominative-accusative language. Lexical items of Bodo for future experiments were also collected.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project is progressing as expected with a focus on the Japanese language. Data of the word order experiment has been collected, and the comparative experiment was developed. Also, Bodo language data has been collected for progress in Year 2 (2019).
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the first part of 2019, data collection for the word order experiment will be analyzed and results will be compared with the Korean study. For the instrumental case experiment, data will be collected using E-prime with young adults as well as older generation. Also, pilots for the comparative study will be conducted with the Superlab software. In the later part of 2019, the analysis of Japanese data will be disseminated at a workshop or a conference (Linguistic Society of Japan). After researching meetings with Dr. Priyankoo Sarmah in July 2019, the Bodo data collection will be conducted in Guwahati, India in November 2019.

Causes of Carryover |
During the first year, main activities involved developing stimuli in Japanese, Korean and Bodo. As such, budgets set aside for disseminating at academic conferences remained unused. This carry-over budget will be used for presenting results of research activities during the second year of the project.
