Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Collaborated with researchers from Europe and Japan in the field of Tocharian and Indo-European linguistics. In particular, collaboration with Athanaric Huard (Doctorant EPHE, PSL) and Yuima Inaba (Research Fellow, Kyoto Koka Women’s University) resulted in the publication of a groundbreaking study and complete translation of the Tocharian B manuscript 197 in Volume 308.2 (2020) of the Journal Asiatique.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

In order to clarify the translation of Sanskrit texts, in particular Buddhist Abhidharma texts, into Tocharian A and B, I have begun a fruitful collaboration with other researchers to publish a new translation and philological study of the Tocharian A manuscripts 384-386. Philological studies such as these are essential for accurately understanding how Sanskrit texts were translated into Tocharian.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

There are a number of papers currently planned for our series on Tocharian Abhidharma texts. These will form the basis for a Tocharian-Sanskrit dictionary.

Causes of Carryover

I was not able to travel abroad last year due to COVID restrictions and plan on doing so this year for conferences.
