Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Goals for FY2 were to focus on statistical analysis, specifically of the apophony database for Research Goal 1 (redundancy) and Research Goal 2 (predictability), and of the survey results for Research Goal 3 (productivity). A presentation on Research Goal 1 was, as planned, given at an international conference and is currently under review at an international journal. The apophony database is currently being analysed with a view to presenting, or publishing, on Research Goal 2. The Principal Investigator and the OC have continued to correspond via email and video conferencing during FY2.

Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Research Goal 1, an analysis of the redundancy of apophony, was completed in FY1. The data has undergone peer scrutiny at the Phonological Society of Japan summer conference in Tokyo in August 2019. A paper has been submitted to a major international journal and is currently under review. It is hoped it will be published during FY3. Research Goal 2, an analysis of the predicatability of apophony was also completed in FY1. Preparation for a presentation has continued apace. The survey required for Research Goal 3 was completed ahead of schedule in FY1. Unfortunately, the heavy workload involved in presenting, and preparing for publication, Research Goal 2 has meant that we were unable to present the data during FY2.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

We had hoped to present the date for Research Goal 3 at a national conference and to present the delayed Research Goal 2 at an international conference during FY3. The onset of the corona virus crisis, however, has meant the conferences we planned to attend have been cancelled or put on hold. It is therefore likely we will be asking for an extension into a FY4 in order for us to complete our goals. The Principal Investigator and the OC will continue to correspond via email and video conferencing during FY3.

Causes of Carryover

Because work proceeded more quickly than expected on both the major statistical analyses, there was no necessity to hold a meeting with the international collaborator, saving a substantial amount of money. It is envisaged that the monies saved from this in Year 2 will be used in Year 3 (or 4, if necessary) towards travel expenses for interim presentations at various conferences.
