Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During this past year, the phase 1 of this study has been successfully completed. This involved the analysis of data from interviewers with 8 medical practitioners, dissemination at three international conference: (1) The COMET conference 2019, Adelaide, Australia; (2) The BAAL conference 2019, Manchester, UK; (3) The ALAPP conference 2019, KL, Malaysia. In addition we have submitted a research paper to one international peer reviewed journal - The Journal of English for Specific Purposes. The paper has received favourable reviews and the revised manuscript is undergoing a second round of reviews.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have also commenced work on the second and final phase of this project - an experimental study assessing how hype influences practitioners' evaluation of research. We have constructed a pilot version of the research instrument, identified suitable participants and made an application for ethics approval. Although coronavirus has slowed progress slightly, we are on track to complete the study on time.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
After obtaining ethics approval, we will recruit participants. As this study will be conducted at a medical institute (in Canada), we expect that some accommodations due to Coronavirus will be necessary. For example, the experiment may be administered via video conferencing rather than face-to-face. Similarly, plans to disseminate at international conferences may need to be re-evaluated. We may, depending on the coronavirus situation, need to submit for journal publication without presentation at an international conference.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The main reason for incurring the amount to be used next fiscal year was the cancellation of international conferences at which we intended to present. The AAAL 2020 conference in the USA for which our oral paper present was accepted was cancelled. Funds taken over to the next fiscal year will be used to administer the experimental study online and for dissemination of the results of phase 2.
