Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In phase 1 (2018-2020), we explored authors' motivations for using 'hype in reports of medical research. We interviewed 8 medical practitioners who have recently published clinical research containing hype. We have since published our results in the journal English for Specific Purposes.
In phase 2 (2020-2021), we assessed how hype impacts on readers' evaluation of research. Working with our collaborator in Canada, we have conducted a randomised controlled trial comparing how medical evaluate abstracts which either contain or do not contain hype. We have completed analysis of the data and are preparing a manuscript for submission to a medical journal.
