Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We have recruited 40 participants for our study; 20 from our university and 20 from numerous countries, including in Europe, Asia, North America, and South America. From this pool of participants, we have collected approximately 400 minutes of video and audio recorded data from 20 conversations, and 600 minutes of video and audio recorded data from 40 interview that we conducted with the participants.
We have also made five presentations in relation to our research project; three domestically and two abroad. Our proposals have also been accepted for other presentations later in 2019 (two domestically and one abroad).
Finally, we have written and submitted a research paper of our findings for conference proceedings. Our paper is currently under review.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have achieved our data collection goals for the first year. Because we all belong to the same institution and work in close proximity to each other, it has enabled us to meet regularly to plan, discuss, and conduct our research as an effective team.
We have collected a large volume of data, and we are pleased with both the quantity and quality of the data we have collected thus far. This has enabled us to present our work to a wide audience at highly respected conferences in our research field numerous times, both domestically and internationally.
Analysis of our remaining data, which we are currently processing, will provide us with further insights and opportunities to present and publish our findings.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will begin our second round of data collection in the first half of this year. We expect to complete this in a shorter period of time as we already have the required, equipment, protocols, and networks.
In the second half of this year, we will focus on developing teaching and assessment materials based on all of our findings to date. We will then be able to present and publish the materials in the early part of 2020.
During the remainder of 2020, we will focus our investigation on writing in ELF contexts. This will include a new phase of data collection and the development of teaching and assessment materials for writing.
|
Causes of Carryover |
We used the majority of our research budget to purchase equipment for data collection in the first year of our research. We also used it for travel expenses to conferences. Some of the co-investigators did not need to use their budget for articles (物品費) because the principal investigator purchased most of the equipment we required to begin our research. Our biggest cost this year will be to pay for processing our data, such as transcription costs. Additionally, we will continue to use our budget for travel expenses to other major conferences both in Japan and overseas.
