Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year we obtained ethical review board clearance for the conduct of four focus groups to be carried out in three cities in western Japan from June to July 2019. The focus groups involved semi-structured interview-based group discussion of various aspects of nurses' use of English in the performance of their nursing duties and in other aspects of their professional life. The groups, comprising a total of 15 nurses, provided data which were subsequently analysed, with the results enabling us to revise and improve our survey questionnaire. Ethical clearance was again obtained for the conduct of a pilot survey, which was carried out from February to the end of April 2020. The pilot survey failed to yield sufficient data for a meaningful analysis and will be repeated over the next year.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Having recovered from earlier delays and returned to our planned schedule, the initiation of our pilot survey coincided with the very early onset of the coronavirus pandemic. We assume that the increased burden on hospital-based nursing staff was the primary factor in the disappointing participation rates in the survey. However, we should recognise that other factors (the delivery method, the means of obtaining the cooperation of senior nursing staff and the process of recruiting participants) might also have influenced the outcome.
In order to rectify this situation we plan to extensively review every aspect of the survey process and, when nursing staff are in a better position to take part in such activities, conduct the pilot survey a second time.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The next stage of this research will be to review every aspect of the survey process and conduct the pilot survey a second time. While we are confident that the survey instrument is suitable for purpose, in order to reach a wider population of nurses it may be necessary to move from a completely random selection process to a combined random / targeted delivery process.
Based on the results of the second survey we expect to be able to carry out the main survey towards the end of the academic year.

Causes of Carryover |
We were unable to complete our main study in the previous financial year.
