Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year we obtained ethical clearance for a second pilot study and carried out the survey over a two-month period from December 2020-January 2021. Compared to the first pilot study, carried out in February 2020, the second aimed to (i) reduce the burden on participants, (ii) further streamline the survey delivery procedure and (iii) significantly increase the number of targeted participants. Unfortunately, the ongoing coronavirus situation seems to have impacted hospital-related research, and the resultant data was again insufficient to be useful for the purposes of our study. We will make further refinements and will carry out the survey one more time in the final year of the grant.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
While the results of our two previous pilot surveys have been disappointing, the one-year extension to our project has enabled us to remain well within our scheduled goal of carrying out a final survey. However, the results of the survey will almost certainly arrive too late to allow the possibility of achieving one of our earlier stated goals, that of holding a symposium to create recommendations for a core curriculum of nursing English.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We plan to submit an application for ethical clearance in June 2021, and carry out a final survey from September to October 2021. Following the disappointing results from our previous pilot studies (in which target institutions were selected on an entirely random basis), we will now adopt a trilateral approach, using an identical survey instrument, but targeting (i) hospitals where the research team has established contacts, (ii) hospitals run by the Japanese Red Cross (by whom the lead researcher in this project is employed) and (iii) as in our previous pilot studies, randomly selected hospitals nationwide. This timeline should enable us to analyze the resultant data and disseminate our findings within the remaining months of the term of the research grant.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The remaining amount will be used to cover the costs of the final survey, conference attendance and the possible organization of a symposium aimed at the development of a core curriculum for nursing English.
