Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To carry out the experiment, an alternative to the initial plan had been designed during FY19-20 to allow students access to i-pads in class. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions on student attendance at the University of Tsukuba last FY20-21, no experiment was possible. We have designed during FY20-21 a second alternative by which students can access an online phonetics application from their own devices so that the experiment can be conducted during FY21-22. For this reason, we were granted a two year extension on the research project till FY23. An article was published on F1000Research concerning related research on 2021-03-08 "Embodied Listening and Coupling".

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
FY18: preparation phase was carried out. FY19: The experiment phase was postponed due to construction at the facility and the dismantlement of CALL rooms. An alternative preparation phase (Plan B) was engineered with iPads for FY20. FY20: Due to the Covid-19 situation students could not attend and use iPads. An alternative preparation phase (Plan C) was developed to have students use an application from their homes. This experiment is implemented in FY21.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The experiment which was due to be held in FY19-20, is finally being held in FY21-22. The first results of the experiment will be reported at the 15th World Congress of the International Federation of French Teachers in Tunisia on July 9-14 2021. The final results of the experiment will be published in 2023.

Causes of Carryover |
Funds remain from FY20 because the experiment and analysis phase have been delayed. Also there was no chance to attend a planned international event due to Covid-19. Funds will be reallocated and used in FY21 for:- Personnel Expenditure and Remuneration: of experts for student phonetical productions, for help on data collection and management (Analysis phase);- Article Costs: laptop and applications for statistics (Experiment and Analysis phases);- Miscellaneous: image design for statistical results in research article to be published (Publication phase).
