Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This project focuses on creating a corpus of first-person non-Japanese patient accounts of an experience at a Japanese hospital. With these accounts, the PI will create e-learning materials for students to practice intensive and extensive listening as well as develop cultural competency. The PI intended to interview 100 non-Japanese residents by the third year of the project, but has only gathered 20 interviews. Of these interviews 80% where to be conducted with non-native English speakers. Currently, this target is being met, but the Pi would like to recruit more participants from China and Korea.
The PI has begun the preliminary analysis of experiences, establishing some basic categories such as lack of procedural knowledge and lack of privacy.
The PI had planned to present progress reports and preliminary findings this year, but conferences have been postponed, canceled, or moved online after the closing of the call for papers.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The PI has only been able to recruit 20 participants out of 100, partly due to the inability to locate participants for face-to-face interviews and partly due to the C19 pandemic that occurred during a period set aside for interviews.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The PI plans to conduct the remaining interviews online over the next year and ask for an extension, so that I can complete the analysis, create online materials, and present my project.

Causes of Carryover |
This grant was awarded in 2018. I had planned to conduct three stages of interviews. Each stage would be followed by transcribing and analyzing the data. However, I was unable to recruit the target number of interview participants. This caused money to be carried over from 2018 to 2019. For this same reason, money is being carried over from 2019 to 2020.
In 2020, I plan to complete 80 interviews (2000 yen honorarium) and have 100 interviews transcribed.
