Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This project focuses on creating a corpus of first-person immigrant/foreign patient accounts of an experience at a Japanese hospital. With these accounts, the PI will create e-learning materials for students to practice intensive and extensive listening as well as develop cultural competency.

The PI identified basic themes in the first 20 narratives and developed categories, such as the patient's lack of procedural knowledge and lack of privacy. These categories are similar to those reported in Watanabe & Sakka (2017) and Puebla Fortier (2016).

The PI developed a curriculum using the existing narratives and a methodology for delivery as a 5-week online class.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

The ability to locate participants was greatly affected by the C19 pandemic, which resulted in a less time for research and fewer foreign students and tourists to approach.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

All remaining interviews are being carried out online using a snowball approach to gather participants. By the end of this fiscal year, the collected narratives will be transcribed and analyzed, and online materials will be prepared.

Presentations and publications are planned for 2022 and beyond.

Causes of Carryover

The C19 pandemic has greatly affected my ability to recruit and meet with participants. Monies will be used to compensate remaining interview participants (up to 80) and transcription service providers (100 narratives) as well as software licenses for text analysis and corpus construction (Provalis ProSuite and Sketch Engine).
