Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I recruited an additional 10 foreign and immigrant residents to share their stories of receiving hospital care in Japan. I now have 30 eight- to fifteen-minute first-person oral recordings.
A sub-section of 12 accounts was used in a 15-week course for fourth-year students. Students were divided into two groups and each group was given a different patient. Outside of class, students listened to the accounts, created a patient profile and summarized the chief complaint, care details, and any challenges encountered by the patient. During class, pairs made of one student from each group introduced their patient. Ten students enrolled in the course and end-of-semester feedback was received from 8. Overall, students reported that the class helped them to become more aware of factors that influence the ability of immigrant and foreign patients to receive satisfactory medical care in Japan, more confident about providing nursing care for someone from another country, and more aware of strategies for communicating with immigrant and foreign patients. Students also reported realizing the importance of advocating for immigrant and foreign patients as nurses. Students suggested the course could be improved by providing listening transcripts as well as adding an additional step in class where students discuss what kind of support they could provide to the patients in question.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The government's pandemic response included restrictions on foreign immigration, impacting the number of international students and workers in Fukuoka. It has been difficult arranging face-to-face interviews during the pandemic.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I will expand my recruitment efforts to include SNS groups for foreign residents across Japan. This year, I will use an AI transcription service to transcribe the interviews, create online materials targeting listening comprehension and cultural competency, and perform the analysis outlined in the proposal.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Recruit the remaining participants. Transcribe the spoken recordings. Create online activities targeting listening. Revise methodology for fourth-year course.
