Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of this project is to investigate how learners of English can use online speech recognition and synthesis to improve spoken language, and to improve spoken assessment. The 2nd year plan was to perform further tests on the effectiveness of the system, analysis of the data collection system, and further improvements to the system usability and data collection - such as recording of voices.
The results of these developments were presented with 3 paper presentations at JALTCALL 2019, JALT National 2019, and at the international EUROCALL 2019 in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. A peer-reviewed paper was published in "AI and Machine Learning in Language Education" published by JALTCALL.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Major improvements have been made to user interface and this will allow the co-investigators more opportunities to use the system effectively. A notable improvement has been the implementation of a space learning feature which will be the basis of research studies this year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
A major goal for this year is to finish implementation and do a study on the pronunciation and vocabulary acquisition through the use of spaced repetition. Spaced repetition is a well-known learning technique but hasn't been tested in the context of spaced repetition. These studies will be carried out at 3 institutions: Kanazawa University, Ishikawa Prefectural University, the University of Shimane.

Causes of Carryover |
A planned business trip was canceled due to COVID-19. I plan to travel instead in the following year.
