KeywordsEye-tracking / cognitive process / summary writing / careful reading / expeditious reading
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The main purpose of the project study was to deepen an understanding of the cognitive processing of reading by monitoring the eye-movements during careful and expeditious reading during the TOEFL Integrated Writing Task.

We have collected data from 22 participants to investigate whether eye-tracking data can help elicit differences between skilled and unskilled writers during careful and expeditious reading. Also, we explored an eye-movement extract method to examine a possibility to computationally differentiate types of reading (careful and expeditious) by analyzing the gaze patterns.

We were able to find the findings at international conferences, including at the JACET (Nagoya), the AALA (Hanoi), the New Directions (Yokohama).

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

We have managed to apply for additional funding to expand the collaborative research and waiting for the result. We are hoping to collect more data for the validation. Meanwhile, we are trying to submit a manuscript for a paper publication.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

We have been approached by researchers for international collaborations in the future. To expand this type of study, we need more equipment and research funding that allows more testing for data analysis. We will apply for the current JSPS- Kaken project for 2021 to expand the study, bringing more resources to the existing project.
