Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The final year of this research project has met challenges due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In the last year, we used collected data from the pilot study and further run data analysis to put together a manuscript for a journal. The manuscript has been submitted and waiting for the decision.
In this project, we explored different types of reading during summary writing. Integrated Writing Task in which test-takers are required to summarize the main points from multiple sources. The study used the eye-tracking method to help elicit differences between skilled and unskilled readers during summary writing.
The findings suggest that the second phase of reading reflected more on individual reading behaviors than test-takers' language proficiency. The study validated the complex nature of the integrated reading-listening-writing task with respect to reading skills. Further studies would include analyzing the written outputs (i.e., essays) to help investigate various aspects of reading behaviors for summary writing. The qualitative analysis is underway using the Nvivo software for another publication.
