Outline of Final Research Achievements

The result of the research project is a systematic exploration of the frequency of speech act indicating patterns in German. A corpus of 1.5 billion words from online discussion forums was compiled in order to answer the question of which linguistic patterns are used in German to perform certain speech acts. In total, the distribution of over 6000 different patterns was examined. The analysis resulted in: 1. a ranking of the patterns according to speech act types. 2. adjacency patterns of speech act indicating patterns within one utterance. 3. simple example sentences for each pattern selected on the basis of grammatical simplicity and simplicity of vocabulary.
The frequency of linguistic patterns that indicate speech acts could be calculated for the first time for German on the basis of a large corpus. This should help teachers and learners of German as a foreign language to select the linguistic patterns that are used most frequently in German.
