Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the third year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were not able to collect data in classrooms, hold data sessions or seminars, and we were not allowed to travel for conference presentations. Therefore, we focused our efforts mainly on transcribing and analyzing the data that we collected the previous year. We received feedback on one of our papers, focusing on the formulaic phrase "I don't know", submitted in the 2019 academic year, and revised it and resubmitted it to an international journal. It was accepted and is currently in the status as Ahead of Print. We also wrote a paper on the formulaic phrase "How about~", submitted it to an international journal focused on intercultural pragmatics, revised it according to reviewer feedback, and it was accepted for publication.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Because of the pandemic, our data collection, participation in data sessions, and presentation at conferences was severely restricted. However, we were able to get some writing done.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In our final year of this research project examining the formulaic utterances that learners use to express their ideas during small-group classroom discussions we will focus on further analysis of the data collected, write up our findings, and submit papers to journals. Due to the pandemic affecting our research plans, the following first outlines our contingent plans that we hope to accomplish. We will continue transcribing the video-recorded interaction from the student discussions. We will be continuing to analyze our data through online discussion of our transcripts and video. Working with our research cooperator and other colleagues in this field, we will conduct online data sessions to present initial findings. We will write and submit papers on the formulaic phrases.

Causes of Carryover |
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were unable to conduct our research as planned. If possible, we will present our research findings at an international conference and at a domestic conference in the academic year 2021. In addition, we will use the remaining funds to replace our old equipment and purchase a new computer for data analysis.
