Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
A review of the literature on effective learning strategies was carried out. Two academic presentations related to the research were given: 1) 全国語学教育学会 第44回年次国際大会教材展示会 (Nov. 24, 2018) titled ‘Effective Learning Strategies: Did you learn them?’, 2) Japan Association for Language Teaching meeting in Okayama (June 23, 2018) titled ‘Desirably Difficult Learning Strategies’. A bank of original questions covering a range of linguistic features has been produced to use in the experimental tools. Various iterations of the tools are in development and a trial study to ensure that the range in difficulty is sufficient to collect useable data will be conducted.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research has been proceeding smoothly up until the present. Access to relevant journal articles and books has proven very easy. This has come, in part, through establishing professional lines of communication with well known academics in the field such as Dr. Henry Roediger and Dr. Yana Weinstein. The next steps in the research will involve recruiting research subjects. A significant concern at this point is that some subjects may start the training program but for 'personal reasons' not complete the entire range of training and tests from start to finish. A large number of incomplete test subjects could negatively affect the data collected.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The research will be promoted through multiple academic presentations and some publications. I have have been accepted to present at the JALT 2019 International Conference taking place in Nagoya and I have submitted a presentation proposal to present at KoTESOL in the autumn of 2019. Internationally, I will be submitting proposals to the TESOL conference in Denver, CO, USA in 2020. At this point, there are no changes to the research plan. It is distinctly possible that following the pre-experiment trials some problem may arise which require some modification to ensure that valid data are collected.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The majority of the funds will be used to remunerate test subjects. The research involves 100 subjects divided into five groups. Following initial assessment and training sessions, each group will have unique training sessions. These will be followed by two final assessments. Total = 28 sessions.
