| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to examine the integration in the Roman Empire in the age of the Principate. For a long time, the scholars have emphasized the development of urbanization and Romanization of the early Roman Empire in the West and have assumed that the Gallic Provinces were integrated into the Imperial System. But, on the basis of our research, we conclude that the urbanization and Romanization in the Gallic Provinces made slow progress. Also, we should attach the great importance to the lifestyle of the indigenous people and hybridity of cultures in the provinces of the Roman West.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究の結果、ローマ帝国が征服した諸地域を都市化しローマ風の生活様式を伝えて「文明化」したとの伝統的な説明も、ローマ世界に「グローバル化」概念を適用しようとする新説も、ともに適切な学説とは認めがたいことが判明した。とくに今日のヨーロッパ西部地域の古代史については、ローマ支配の影響力を過大評価せず、また住民のアイデンティティの多様さと重層性、さらに可変性に留意する必要がある。そうした観点からの歴史研究は、現代ヨーロッパ社会の歴史的性格や現状のより深い理解にも貢献できると思われる
