Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I continued to work on the publication of a book on information governance law. I finished a chapter with a study on reasonable efforts required to establish trade secret protection in various jurisdictions, and also contributed to collecting and editing other chapters of that book. We submitted the manuscript to the publisher, and expect publication in the next months. Relatedly, I gave a presentation on topics that the chapter touches on at an online conference hosted by Tokyo University in March 2021. Another project that I was able to complete during the academic year 2020 was the publication of a book on design law protection in Japan. Finally, I hosted a number of online conferences or public webinars that relate to patent law or other means to encourage innovation.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the covid-19 pandemic, international travel became impossible during the last academic year. While certain types of seminars were shifted to an online format, other conference at which I was planning were cancelled. Also, I was planning to certain hearings that work better in an in-person format and that I had to postpone to a time when international travel be feasible again.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I will conduct further work especially in the context of patent law over the next year. I am planning to summarize the survey during this summer. I will also conduct further research on revised patent enforcement procedures in Japan this year. Further, I have been observing increased scrutiny on enablement and written disclosure requirement especially in US patent law. As these requirement directly impact the disclosure function of patent law, I will focus some of my time on researching these recent issues.

Causes of Carryover |
If possible, I am intending to participate in international conferences and obtain feedback from a broader community on projects prepare for publication.
