Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Research Goals: This project was designed to investigate the political meanings of the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration, focusing especially on public commemoration. Research Results: The decision by the Japanese government to engage the commemoration only minimally forced some rethinking of the project, which became even more pressing with the COVID pandemic. But the number of refereed articles and book chapters to have appeared from the project suggests that my redrafting this as an examination of history, narrative, and spectacle has worked relatively well, allowing me to place the Restoration's anniversary in conversation with other major events, such as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
